Senate Disowns Oshiomhole's Comments on NNPCL

The Nigerian Senate has formally disowned comments made by Adams Oshiomhole regarding the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), which he labeled a "bunch of criminal thieves." The Senate clarified that it does not authorize any committee to issue an arrest warrant without the Senate President's approval, as per the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act. This statement followed a motion led by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele during a plenary session.

The Senate's Public Accounts Committee had reportedly recommended an arrest warrant against former NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari for failing to honor an invitation. The Senate emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum and avoiding statements that could damage the reputation of public officials.

Several senators, including Barau Jibrin and Abba Moro, supported the motion to clarify the Senate's position, stressing the need for adherence to constitutional provisions and the rule of law. Adamu Aliero criticized Oshiomhole's remarks as reckless, arguing they could jeopardize foreign investment in Nigeria.
