Gumi Demands Senate Probe into Civilian Casualties from Airstrike

Sheikh Gumi has demanded a Senate investigation into a recent military airstrike that resulted in civilian casualties, stating that condolences are insufficient. His comments followed reports of an airstrike on a weekly market in Jilli village, Gubio Local Government Area, Borno State, on a Saturday evening, which reportedly killed at least 30 people. Gumi questioned the conduct of military operations and called for accountability from the pilots involved. He referenced previous incidents of military airstrikes causing civilian casualties, including a December 2023 incident in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State. Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, confirmed the strike and described the area as a hub for alleged Boko Haram insurgents. Eyewitnesses reported multiple fighter jets involved in the operation, with panic spreading among traders and residents. The Yobe State governor's special adviser on security, Abdulsalam Dahiru, also confirmed the incident, clarifying that Jilli village falls within Gubio Local Government Area.
