NAFA Launches SHINE to Empower 1,000 Girls in Nigeria

The Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) launched the SHINE programme on October 30, 2026, at The Law Hub in Ibadan. This initiative aims to empower over 1,000 adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 in Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Imo, and the Federal Capital Territory.

The programme focuses on sports, mentorship, digital and financial literacy, leadership development, and pathways to education and employment. NAFA Chief Executive Officer Babajide Akeredolu stated that SHINE addresses the challenges girls face during the transition from secondary school to further education and employment.

He noted that many girls struggle due to a lack of coordination in the education system and vocational training opportunities. Akeredolu highlighted NAFA's experience in sport-for-development and the importance of structured support for young people.

The programme's progress will be measured against indicators agreed upon with partners, including Agence Française de Développement and the International Olympic Committee. Nancy Damhindi, the Gridiron Gems Initiative Coordinator at NAFA, emphasized that SHINE builds on previous successes in promoting personal development through sports.
