NAFDAC Destroys N8 Billion in Fake Products in Lafia
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) conducted a destruction exercise in Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Thursday, destroying fake products valued at N8 billion. The operation was led by Mr. Joseph Edor, the Deputy Director in charge of the North Central Zone, representing the Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye.
The majority of the destroyed items were banned alcoholic beverages in small volumes of less than 200ml, which have been linked to abuse and addiction among Nigerian youths and underage school children. Prof. Adeyeye highlighted the adverse effects of early alcohol exposure on health, including mental retardation and poor academic performance.
The agency's actions stemmed from a ban on the production, distribution, and sale of such alcoholic beverages. Additionally, expired, fake, and unwholesome food, drugs, and cosmetics were also destroyed.
NAFDAC's mandate is to ensure the safety and efficacy of regulated products in Nigeria, and the agency collaborates with law enforcement and other stakeholders for effective operations.
