NAFDAC Targets Local Counterfeit Drug Networks in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public about the activities of alleged Chinese counterfeit syndicates that have transitioned from importing fake products into Nigeria to creating local manufacturing and distribution networks. This alarming trend includes the circulation of dangerous consumer products such as adulterated toothpaste and contaminated bottled water.

Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC's Director of Investigation and Enforcement, revealed that investigations indicated foreign nationals are now producing and distributing fake products locally. In response, NAFDAC has initiated the closure of illegal logistics facilities linked to these counterfeit networks.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, stated that the agency has confiscated and destroyed regulated products valued at over N1.5 trillion during enforcement operations in Lagos and the South-east. Between June 2025 and June 2026, NAFDAC achieved 64 convictions of counterfeiters, the highest recorded by the agency, with ongoing legal proceedings against suspects in multiple states.
