NAFDAC Launches 600 Pharmacists to Combat Fake Drugs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) inaugurated 600 pharmacists from the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of the Pharmacists Reserve Volunteer Programme (PRVP). This initiative is designed to strengthen the fight against substandard and falsified medicines, unwholesome food, and drug abuse.

NAFDAC director-general, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, administered the oath of allegiance to the volunteers and emphasized the importance of integrity, confidentiality, and discipline in their roles. She warned the volunteers against potential corruption, stating that if regulators can be compromised, public safety is at risk.

The selection of the pharmacists was based on merit and equitable geographical representation across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. The programme aims to create a standing pool of trained pharmacists to assist NAFDAC during public health emergencies and regulatory challenges, ensuring that regulatory efforts extend beyond Abuja and key entry points.
