NAS Urges Reform of Nigeria's Criminal Justice System

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) has urged the Nigerian government to reform the criminal justice system, citing that 70% of inmates are held in dilapidated facilities, many awaiting trial for extended periods. During a humanitarian visit to a maximum-security facility in Port Harcourt, Mr.

Ken Henshaw criticized the current system, stating it is unfair and outdated, with many individuals detained for years without conviction. He noted that the conditions are so poor that they violate basic human rights, and called for the government to allocate proper budgets to improve facilities and ensure humane treatment of inmates.

Henshaw highlighted the need for a system that allows individuals accused of crimes to have timely access to justice, rather than languishing in prison. The visit also included donations of medical supplies and essential items to improve the living conditions of inmates.

The NAS plans to continue advocating for reforms and will hold legal roundtable sessions to address critical issues surrounding inmate rights and access to legal representation.
