Nasarawa State Reports Drop in Maternal, Child Mortality

The Nasarawa State Government announced a significant reduction in maternal and child mortality rates in Keffi and Nasarawa Local Government Areas, attributed to sustained healthcare policies. Health Commissioner Dr.

Gaza Gwamna made this statement on Wednesday in Lafia during the opening of the 2026 Joint Annual Review meeting of health workers and partners. He highlighted that the state had previously faced high maternal and child mortality rates but has seen improvements through the adaptation of policies initially formulated by the Federal Ministry of Health.

Dr. Gwamna noted enhancements in health insurance enrollment and health security surveillance.

The two-day stakeholders’ strategic dialogue aimed to review the health sector's performance and plan for future activities. Dr.

Danjuma Baba, Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, pointed out that inadequate manpower in healthcare facilities remains a challenge to fully implementing health policies.
