Kano State Achieves Over 50% Drop in Maternal Mortality

The maternal mortality ratio in Kano State has significantly decreased from 1,025 to 358 deaths per 100,000 live births, marking a reduction of more than 50%. This information was disclosed by Mansura Yahya Haruna, the State Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Coordinator, during a two-day Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCA+N) Technical Working Group meeting organized by the Kano State Ministry of Health, with support from Pathfinder International, the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), and the African Centre for Excellence in Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP).

The data, generated through a project led by Professor Hadiza Galadanci, is being utilized to guide maternal and child health interventions across the state. Haruna attributed the improvement to data-driven interventions and the collaborative efforts of the state government and development partners.

She emphasized the commitment to expand healthcare interventions statewide and improve essential newborn care, antenatal, and postnatal services, including the establishment of neonatal corners in health facilities.
