Nigerian Government Boosts Maternal Care in Anambra

The Nigerian Government has strengthened maternal and newborn healthcare delivery in Anambra State through the provision of essential medical equipment aimed at enhancing emergency healthcare services and reducing preventable deaths among mothers and newborns. This support, provided under the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) programme, was received by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, at the Central Medical Store of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) in Awka.

Dr Obidike described the support as a significant boost to healthcare delivery and commended the Federal Government and the SWAp programme for their efforts. The equipment, which includes delivery beds, laryngoscopes, and incubators, will improve hospitals' capacity to manage emergency obstetric cases and newborn complications.

The beneficiary facilities include General Hospital Nnobi, General Hospital Enugwu-Ukwu, General Hospital Umueri, General Hospital Ekwulobia, and General Hospital Umunze. The distribution was attended by senior health officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr Obiageli Uchebo, and Chief Medical Officers of the beneficiary hospitals.
