Nasarawa Farmers Embrace Climate-Smart Agriculture

Approximately 18,000 smallholder farmers in Nasarawa State are implementing climate-smart agricultural practices to combat climate change and enhance crop yields, soil fertility, and household nutrition. This initiative is facilitated by the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA-Nigeria) under its SAA-NG programme, with funding from the NIPPON Foundation of Japan.

During a media field day in Lafia and Obi Local Government Areas, farmers showcased techniques such as improved seeds, precision planting, biochar application, and nutrition-sensitive agriculture. Mrs. Felicia Alaku, a leader of a women farmers’ group, highlighted the introduction of Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) and its health benefits.

Farmer Jibril Elayo noted that precision planting has reduced seed wastage and costs. The programme also promotes the SAMMAZ 52 maize variety, which matures early and is Vitamin A-biofortified.

Dr. Nathaniel Otene, SAA Coordinator for Climate Resilience and Agrifood Systems Technical, stated that the organization connects farmers with improved technologies to enhance productivity and livelihoods.
