Flooding in Lafia, Nasarawa State Causes Extensive Damage

On a recent morning, heavy rainfall in Lafia, Nasarawa State, from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. resulted in severe flooding, prompting some residents to evacuate their homes. Cheke Emmanuel, a victim from Unguwar Nungu, reported that the flood destroyed fences, a building, and valuables, creating panic among residents.

Fortunately, no lives were lost. Emmanuel attributed the flooding to inadequate drainage systems and poor road conditions, specifically mentioning Ember A and Ember B streets, which require urgent government intervention.

Residents are appealing to the Nasarawa State Government for immediate action to prevent future incidents. Princess Dr Margaret Elayo, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, inspected the affected areas and cautioned against building on water channels.

She linked the flooding to obstructed water channels, poor urban drainage, and climate change, emphasizing the need for preventive measures and community awareness regarding environmental issues.
