NASENI CEO Urges Commercialization of Research in Nigeria

Dr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), called for the urgent commercialization of research and development (R&D) outputs to enhance Nigeria's industrial growth.

Speaking at the 4th Engr. Joseph Oyeyani Makoju Memorial Lecture at the Federal University Lokoja on Thursday, he described the commercialization of R&D as a critical missing link in Nigeria's development trajectory.

Dr. Halilu stressed that bridging the gap between scientific innovation and economic value is essential for transforming the economy from resource dependence to innovation-driven growth.

He noted the significant challenges facing R&D commercialization in Nigeria, including weak financing, high business costs, and inadequate infrastructure. He also pointed out the lack of a strong venture capital ecosystem and the need for reforms to improve technology transfer and industry collaboration.

Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibiley, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, echoed these sentiments, advocating for a shift towards market-driven innovation and the establishment of an innovation entrepreneurship hub.
