NASS Commends FERMA, Discusses 2026 Budget Proposal

On Thursday, the National Assembly (NASS) praised the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) for its prompt improvements in the quality of federal road maintenance across Nigeria. This commendation occurred during a joint committee meeting where FERMA defended its 2025 budget and presented its 2026 budget proposal.

The proposed budget stands at ₦229.99 billion, with ₦191.47 billion earmarked for capital expenditure, which includes a rollover of 70% of ongoing 2025 capital projects. The 2026 fiscal plan comprises 336 projects, including 291 road projects and 75 non-road projects, such as streetlight infrastructure.

Goronyo highlighted that 70% of the project funding amounts to ₦91.47 billion and emphasized the need for a harmonized budget cycle and procurement process to enable contractors to fully utilize the dry season for project delivery. He also appealed for legislative support to strengthen FERMA's operational capacity, referencing the repeal of a 5% user charge on petrol and diesel from the 2017 FERMA amendment act.
