National Assembly Joint Committee Proposes New State for South-East in Nigeria

The National Assembly Joint Committee, comprising members from the Senate and House of Representatives, has recommended the creation of an additional state in the South-East geopolitical zone during a closed-door retreat in Lagos. Led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the committee stressed the importance of constitutional reforms guided by national interests.

The proposal aims to address the clamor for a sixth state in the South-East region, ensuring equity and representation. The move requires ratification by at least 24 state houses of assembly as per the 1999 Constitution.
