NASU and SSANU Announce Nationwide Strike Starting May 1

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have confirmed a nationwide strike commencing at midnight on May 1, 2026. This decision follows the federal government's failure to finalize ongoing negotiations and present a fresh offer to address the unions' grievances.

A letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, was signed by NASU General Secretary Peter Adeyemi and SSANU President Moham Ibrahim. The unions are demanding a 30% salary increase and the consolidation of non-teaching staff allowances, which they argue have not been adequately addressed.

The unions have indicated that the government's inability to conclude negotiations has made the strike inevitable, raising concerns about potential disruptions to Nigeria's university system and administrative support services.
