NASU and SSANU Announce Nationwide Strike Starting May 1

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have declared a nationwide strike commencing at midnight on May 1, 2026. This decision was communicated in a letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

The unions' action follows the federal government's failure to conclude ongoing negotiations and present a fresh offer. NASU's General Secretary, Peter Adeyemi, and SSANU's President, Moham Ibrahim, confirmed the strike's commencement.

They acknowledged the withdrawal of a previous circular concerning a 30 percent increase in consolidated non-teaching staff salaries, stating that this did not address the main issues in dispute. The unions have expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress of negotiations and have decided to embark on industrial action after reaching a consensus that their demands have not been met.
