National Assembly Strengthens Nigeria's Data Protection Law

The National Assembly of Nigeria is taking steps to strengthen the country's data protection law, as announced by Senator Afolabi Salisu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity. The initiative includes a review of the National Data Protection Act of 2023 to meet emerging threats posed by technological advancements.

This effort was discussed during a workshop held in Abuja, organized in collaboration with the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and other development partners. Senator Salisu emphasized that the legislative area requires sufficient knowledge, and the workshop provides an opportunity to build capacity and understand modern principles of data protection.

The review of the National Data Protection Act is particularly crucial given the rapid evolution of technology, and the goal is to create a roadmap and timeline for the legislative process, three years after the law's initial implementation.
