NDPC Plans Review of Data Protection Act for AI Adaptation

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), led by Chief Executive Dr. Vincent Olatunji, announced plans to review the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) of 2023 to better accommodate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

This announcement was made during activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu's signing of the NDPA on June 12, 2023. Olatunji stated that the rapid pace of digital innovation necessitates a reassessment of the Act to ensure it effectively addresses the realities of today's technology-driven environment.

He noted that the legislation must evolve beyond broad references to emerging technologies and include specific mentions of AI and robotics, which have fundamentally altered the digital landscape. Olatunji expressed concerns regarding data privacy and security, emphasizing the importance of human oversight in AI deployment.

The NDPC will continue to monitor global developments and ensure that Nigeria's data protection framework remains relevant and effective in the face of rapid technological changes.
