DSS and NIA Investigate NFF Officials for Security Threats

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) are investigating officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for allegedly collaborating with foreign entities to threaten national security. This investigation was prompted by intercepted communications that raised alarms about the officials' activities.

The probe extends beyond the ₦17 billion intervention fund approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024, intended to settle outstanding payments to national teams. While the EFCC is handling financial impropriety issues, the DSS and NIA's involvement indicates serious concerns regarding national security.

Reports suggest that at least half of the NFF executive may resign due to fears surrounding the investigation, potentially affecting the scheduled NFF board election on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. The NFF has faced criticism following the failure of both the Super Eagles and Super Falcons to qualify for their respective World Cups, marking a historic setback for Nigerian football.
