Nigerian Navy Seizes Three Vessels for Illegal Fishing

The Nigerian Navy intercepted three vessels, MV Olufunke 1, MV Iruo Oghene, and AM 8702, between August 26 and 28, 2026, within the Western Naval Command’s Area of Responsibility during Operation Abo Eja 2026. Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, represented by Capt. Olanrewaju Olubunmi, stated that preliminary investigations revealed significant concerns, including alleged fishing in restricted areas, irregularities with Automatic Identification System (AIS) and communication equipment, and discrepancies in vessel classification and documentation.

Consequently, the vessels were handed over to the fisheries authorities for further investigation and regulatory action. The Navy emphasized that these alleged violations placed the vessels under the regulatory purview of the FDFA, which would determine appropriate actions based on the investigation's outcome.

The enforcement action is part of the Navy's ongoing efforts to protect Nigeria's maritime domain and prevent illegal exploitation of marine resources. The Western Naval Command, under Rear Admiral AA Mustapha, aims to enhance collaboration with the FDFA and other stakeholders through coordinated patrols and inspections.
