Navy Seizes N660m Stolen Crude Oil, Arrests 12 Crew

On July 23, 2026, the Nigerian Navy, under the Eastern Naval Command, intercepted the oil tanker MT FILIA (IMO No. 8662684) in Akwa Ibom State, which was allegedly transporting stolen crude oil valued at over N660 million. The operation, part of the ongoing Operation Delta Sentinel, was based on credible intelligence and involved a patrol boat that intercepted the tanker after it departed the offshore oil terminal.

Upon sighting the Navy, the crew attempted to discharge the stolen crude oil into the sea, causing maritime pollution. Preliminary investigations indicated that the vessel had loaded approximately 650 metric tonnes of crude oil.

Commodore AA Umar stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances of the theft and identify other individuals involved. Operation Delta Sentinel, launched in January 2026 by Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, aims to enhance maritime security and combat crimes such as crude oil theft and illegal bunkering.

Umar warned criminals to desist from such activities, emphasizing the Navy's commitment to justice.
