NBA Condemns Police Assault on Yobe Lawyer Saminu Na Iloka

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the alleged beating and abuse of lawyer Saminu Na Iloka by police officers at Damagum Police Station in Fune Local Government Area, Yobe State, on February 23, 2026. Saminu was reportedly assaulted while discharging his professional duties, specifically when he visited the station to represent a client in custody.

Ahmad Khalil, the chairman of the NBA Damaturu branch, described the alleged assault as a flagrant violation of constitutional rights and an attack on the administration of justice. The NBA emphasized that such actions undermine the rule of law and erode public confidence in the justice system.

Khalil called for an immediate independent and transparent investigation into the incident and demanded the suspension of the officers involved, as well as appropriate disciplinary action in line with the Nigeria Police Act. He requested a written response from the police command within one week.

The incident has drawn attention to the treatment of legal practitioners in Nigeria.
