NBA Forum Advocates for Disability Inclusion in Justice

The NBA Lawyers with Disabilities Forum convened its annual conference in Asaba, Delta State, under the theme "Beyond Triumph: Advance Inclusion Impact Leadership." The forum, chaired by Patience Etumudon, emphasized the need for structural reforms within Nigeria's justice system to guarantee full inclusion of lawyers with disabilities. A communiqué adopted at the conference identified persistent barriers such as inaccessibility of courtrooms and public buildings, weak implementation of disability laws, and high unemployment rates among lawyers with disabilities.

The forum called for reforms to federal and state laws, including amendments to the 1999 Constitution and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act of 2018. Recommendations included ensuring access to public infrastructure, strengthening data collection on disabilities, and developing comprehensive NBA policies on disability inclusion.

The forum urged the government to prioritize enforcement of disability rights and to adopt inclusive workplace policies. It also highlighted the importance of integrating disability awareness into legal education and training.
