NBA Warns Against Court Interference in Political Disputes

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has cautioned against judicial interference in political party disputes, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria's democratic process in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. In a statement released on Friday, signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe, the association noted a concerning trend of litigation aimed at drawing courts into internal party disputes, despite clear statutory provisions that limit judicial intervention in these matters.

The NBA referenced Section 83 of the Electoral Act 2022, which explicitly restricts courts from entertaining suits related to the internal affairs of political parties. The association expressed concern over the continued judicial involvement in these matters, which could disrupt party leadership contests and internal governance structures.

The NBA also warned legal practitioners against acting as political agents in pursuit of partisan outcomes and indicated that disciplinary actions could be initiated against lawyers who violate these provisions. The NBA urged the judiciary to exercise restraint and avoid being drawn into politically motivated disputes.
