NCC Launches Framework to Combat Fake Phones in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has initiated the implementation of an enhanced Type Approval Compliance framework designed to identify fake, cloned, and non-compliant SIM-enabled communication devices in Nigeria. Engr. Edoyemi Ogoh, the Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity at the NCC, announced this during a media briefing on Tuesday at the Commission’s head office annex in Mbora, Abuja.
The framework will allow the NCC to electronically verify the Type Approval status of devices, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Ogoh emphasized that Type Approval is crucial for consumer protection and maintaining network performance.
The initiative is supported by Section 132(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, which mandates that service providers and manufacturers obtain Type Approval before selling or using communication equipment in Nigeria. The NCC aims to enhance regulatory oversight, improve compliance, and foster a fair business environment.
Stakeholder consultations have been conducted to shape the implementation process, and the NCC is collaborating with various entities, including the Nigeria Customs Service, to ensure effective execution.
