NCC Launches NG-IMEI Scanner to Combat Counterfeit Devices

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced the NG-IMEI Scanner application to facilitate device registration for dealers, identify duplicate International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, and minimize errors in verifying communication devices. Mr. Tunji Jimoh, Director and Zonal Controller of the NCC Lagos Zonal Office, announced this development during a press conference on the Device Checker Platform in Ikoyi.

The application allows dealers to efficiently scan and organize IMEI numbers, thereby enhancing the NCC's efforts to combat counterfeit and non-compliant devices in Nigeria. The NCC has listed over 2,900 type-approved devices on its website, regularly updating the register to ensure compliance with technical and regulatory standards.

Manufacturers must submit product samples and relevant certifications for assessment before entering the Nigerian market. The Device Checker Platform also enables importers and buyers to verify devices before transactions.

Existing mobile phone users are not required to re-register, as previous records have been migrated to the new platform.
