Nigeria on High Alert for Ebola Amid Rising Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is on high alert due to a reported increase in suspected Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, as confirmed by World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The current outbreak is attributed to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which has no known vaccine or treatment.

Symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, and vomiting, with the virus spreading through close contact with infected individuals or animals. Nigeria previously faced an Ebola crisis in 2014, which resulted in eight deaths, including that of Dr.

Ameyo Adadevoh, who played a crucial role in containing the outbreak. The country was declared Ebola-free on October 20, 2014, after swift coordination efforts.

Currently, the NCDC, led by Director-General Jide Idris, is enhancing surveillance and response measures at entry points and ensuring public awareness campaigns are in place, despite no confirmed cases in Nigeria.
