Nigeria 59% Prepared for Potential Ebola Outbreak

Dr. Jide Idris, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), announced that Nigeria is 59% ready to handle a potential Ebola outbreak.

Speaking in Lagos, he acknowledged gaps in the country's preparedness but expressed confidence in its response mechanisms. He emphasized that while Nigeria cannot be 100% prepared, it has learned valuable lessons from the successful containment of the Ebola outbreak in 2014.

The current assessment highlights the need for improved surveillance and readiness across the country, particularly at land borders and airports. The NCDC is actively deploying advisories to states to evaluate readiness levels and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.

Dr. Idris noted that Nigeria's extensive land borders and international travel contribute to its vulnerability, necessitating ongoing efforts to strengthen surveillance and response capabilities.
