Lassa Fever Deaths in Nigeria Rise to 219 in 2026

As of the 25th epidemiological week of 2026, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported that Lassa fever deaths have risen to 219, with a total of 891 confirmed cases across 23 states and 111 local government areas. The case fatality rate stands at 24.6%, an increase from 18.6% recorded during the same period in 2025.

The report indicated 22 new confirmed cases and three deaths during the week, with 150 suspected cases across four states. Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, and Benue states account for 85% of the confirmed cases this year, with Ondo state recording the highest burden at 29%.

The affected demographic primarily includes individuals aged 21 to 30 years, with a median age of 30 years. The NCDC emphasized the need for improved community engagement and adherence to infection prevention measures to control the outbreak.
