NCPWD Empowers Special Needs Children with Devices

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) conducted a two-day intervention program at NAFOWA Special Needs School located at the Nigerian Air Force base on Airport Road, Abuja. This initiative involved assessing and prescribing assistive devices for pupils with disabilities, which are critical tools for empowering these children and enhancing their educational development.

Dr. Kehind Ogunbiyitan, head of the education unit at NCPWD, stated that the devices improve communication and support independent living, thus removing barriers to quality education.

The program aligns with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018. Mr.

Aisha Ramallan, vice president of NAFOWA, praised the NCPWD for its unwavering support. Dr.

Ismail Idri, head of the assistive device technology unit, emphasized that access to assistive technology is a right, not a privilege. The event concluded with gratitude expressed by school officials for the support received, which will help address the inadequacies in assistive devices for children.
