NDC Legal Adviser Faces Jail Threat Over Dual Membership

Reuben Egwuaba, the current legal adviser of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), is under scrutiny for allegedly holding dual membership with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). This situation has sparked legal concerns about compliance with Nigeria's electoral laws.

A review of documents revealed that Egwuaba's name appears in the leadership structure of both parties, which contradicts Section 77 of the electoral provisions that prohibit dual party membership. Civil rights activist Julius Aondowas criticized the situation, suggesting it is not merely an administrative error but a serious violation of the law.

Under Nigerian law, individuals found guilty of dual party membership face a fine of 10 million naira or a two-year prison term. The NDC's national executive committee requires full exclusive membership, making Egwuaba's simultaneous roles potentially criminal.

The situation demands urgent clarification from the relevant authorities, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to ensure compliance with Nigeria's democratic governance.
