NDLEA Targets Drug Cartels' Finances Ahead of World Drug Day

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), under the leadership of Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa, is focusing on targeting the financial empires of drug cartels in Nigeria. During a joint press briefing at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime headquarters in Abuja, Marwa announced that the NDLEA's strategy extends beyond arresting drug traffickers to dismantling the economic foundations of these criminal networks.

The agency is deploying civil action and asset forfeiture measures against suspected drug crime proceeds, aiming to cut off the financial lifeblood of these organizations. Marwa highlighted the NDLEA's unprecedented conviction rate and the strengthened provisions of the Proceeds of Crime Act, which empower the agency to pursue the financial interests of drug barons.

The NDLEA will also conduct a week of activities to commemorate World Drug Day, including a walk against drugs, a youth school program, and a final event at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on June 26, 2026.
