NDLEA's Marwa Advocates for Targeting Drug Barons' Wealth

Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), addressed an international audience at the 43rd Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime in the United Kingdom. He emphasized that the fight against drug trafficking must extend beyond arrests to include aggressive pursuit of criminals' financial assets.

Marwa stated that a trafficker who retains wealth after arrest can continue their operations. He outlined six strategies the NDLEA has implemented to enhance asset recovery, referencing the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act 2004, the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act 2022, and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.

Notably, he mentioned the forfeiture of the Hook Hotel, linked to a fugitive drug suspect, which sold for $4.2 million. Marwa also reported that the NDLEA froze over $7 million in bank accounts and secured interim forfeiture orders for assets linked to a methamphetamine syndicate.
