NDPC Investigates Temu for Data Protection Violations

The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced an investigation into Temu, an e-commerce platform, over alleged violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act. The investigation was directed by Dr.

Vincent Olatunji, the Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, following concerns regarding online surveillance practices and the processing methods of personal data. Preliminary findings indicate that Temu processes personal data for approximately 12.7 million data subjects in Nigeria, while maintaining an estimated 70 million daily active users globally.

Dr. Olatunji emphasized the importance of data processors ensuring compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, particularly regarding the principles of data minimization, transparency, and duty of care in cross-border data transfers.

The NDPC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights and freedoms of Nigerians in relation to data protection and privacy, as stated by Babatunde Bamigboy, Esq., the Head of Legal Enforcement Regulation at the NDPC.
