NDPC Investigates Temu for Data Protection Violations

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has ordered an immediate investigation into the global e-commerce platform Temu over allegations of violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA). The investigation arises from concerns regarding the mishandling of user data, with preliminary findings indicating possible infractions related to online surveillance practices, transparency, data minimization principles, and obligations concerning cross-border transfer of personal information.

Vincent Olatunji, the Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, disclosed that Temu reportedly processes personal data belonging to approximately 12.7 million Nigerians, alongside an estimated 70 million daily users globally. The NDPC has warned that failure to comply with the NDPA could result in legal consequences, emphasizing its commitment to enforcing Nigeria's data protection framework across digital platforms operating within the country.

Babatund Bamigboy, the head of legal enforcement at the NDPC, highlighted the necessity for strict adherence to statutory requirements, noting that violations could lead to formal enforcement actions.
