Nigerian Senate Reviews Data Protection Act 2023

The Nigerian Senate is undertaking a review of the Data Protection Act 2023 to tackle emerging threats associated with technological advancements. Afolabi Salisu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, announced this initiative during a three-day workshop in Abuja aimed at promoting data protection awareness.

The workshop was organized in collaboration with the National Assembly and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC), alongside development partners. Salisu emphasized the importance of ensuring citizens' data safety and the need for lawmakers to establish a legal framework that protects private data.

He highlighted that while public Wi-Fi applications may appear free, users often pay with their data without awareness. Stanlei Olajid, Chairman of the House Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, reiterated that data is crucial for Nigeria's prosperity, stating that the country must protect its citizens' rights and data integrity.
