NDPC and Meta Launch Two-Year Data Protection Initiative

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Meta Platforms have unveiled a two-year data protection initiative designed to strengthen privacy safeguards and build regulatory compliance programs. This partnership aims to align with Nigeria's privacy framework and follows regulatory engagement between NDPC and Meta regarding data processing practices in Nigeria.

The initiative, which is part of a settlement agreement with Meta, will run until 2025 and includes public awareness campaigns targeting vulnerable groups. It is structured to reinforce strategic guardrails for data subjects and will focus on four key areas: governance, research and development, safety mechanisms across the technology ecosystem, and capacity development for the NDPC.

The initiative does not limit the NDPC's statutory authority and will continue to operate independently in regulating data processing activities in Nigeria. This collaboration marks a significant opportunity to reset regulatory relations in Africa's largest internet market, enhancing privacy protections essential for building trust in digital services and attracting investment in Nigeria's growing technology sector.
