NEDC Launches Electric Vehicle Initiative in North-East Nigeria

The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has announced a plan to deploy 10,330 electric vehicles, comprising 10,000 electric tricycles, 300 electric taxis, and 30 electric buses, across the six states of North-East Nigeria. This initiative aims to reduce transportation costs, create employment opportunities, and promote environmentally friendly mobility.
The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ engagement workshop held in Bauchi, where NEDC State Coordinator Alhaji Aliyu Isiyaku emphasized the importance of stakeholder involvement for successful implementation. The project is in partnership with Attahir Enterprises Nigeria Limited, whose CEO Gudu Umar Abacha noted that the electric vehicles could travel up to 300 kilometres on a full charge.
The electric buses and taxis will operate in urban areas, while tricycles will serve rural communities. Three charging points will be established to support operations, and beneficiaries will receive training on safe vehicle operation.
Traditional rulers, represented by Lawal Mohammed Kirfi, pledged to support community awareness about the initiative.
