NEMA Launches Flood Preparedness Campaign in Bauchi

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) launched a disaster preparedness campaign in Bauchi to combat flood-related hazards. The campaign was announced by Director General Zubaida Umar during a stakeholder engagement event.

He highlighted the recurring impacts of floods, including loss of lives, disruption of public and private infrastructure, and displacement of residents across Nigeria. The campaign is part of a national preparedness initiative against floods, coinciding with the 2016 season climate predictions released by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

According to NIMET, fourteen states and 132 local government areas are at high risk of flooding. Hajiya Amina Katagum, the state commissioner for humanitarian affairs and disaster management, called on civil society organizations and traditional and religious leaders to mobilize community participation in disaster preparedness activities.

She commended NEMA for organizing the program and urged residents in flood-prone areas to avoid building on waterways and maintain proper sanitation around their surroundings to ensure safety.
