Sokoto, NEMA Launch 2026 Flood Preparedness Campaign

The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) inaugurated the 2026 National Preparedness Response Campaign for flood disasters on Tuesday. The event took place at the Sultan Maccido Institute of Qu'ranic and General Studies Auditorium in Sokoto.

Prof. Abubakar Junaidu, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, represented the Special Adviser overseeing the agency, Aminu Bodinga.

The campaign aims to warn communities about imminent floods and disseminate early warning messages effectively. Sokoto State has faced significant flooding in recent years, impacting homes, farmland, and infrastructure.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency forecast significant rainfall, increasing flood risks. NEMA's Mr.

Zubaida Umar indicated that 132 local government areas across Nigeria are classified as high flood risk zones. The campaign emphasizes a whole-society approach to disaster risk reduction, involving traditional rulers, religious organizations, and media to strengthen community preparedness.
