NEMA Urges States to Prepare for 2026 Flood Risks

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called on states to initiate early actions to combat flooding, forecasting severe floods in 30 states during the 2026 rainy season. This announcement was made by Manzo Ezekiel Umar, head of NEMA's media unit, during a visit to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in Yola, Adamawa State.

The visit was part of activities to mark the flag-off of the 2026 National Preparedness Response Campaign for flood disaster-related hazards. Umar identified key actions necessary to mitigate flood impacts, including the reintroduction of strict enforcement of monthly environmental sanitation exercises, regular drainage clearing, and strengthening support for state emergency management agencies (SEMA).

She also disclosed that NEMA has developed a climate-related risk management framework to guide coordinated efforts aimed at reducing flood-related disasters nationwide. Governor Fintiri commended NEMA for its proactive approach, particularly the early warning sensitization campaign ahead of the rainy season.
