NEMA Warns of Flood Risks in 178 Kano Communities

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning regarding potential flooding in 178 communities across 28 local government areas in Kano State during the 2026 rainy season. This announcement was made during a stakeholders' meeting to launch the 2026 National Preparedness Response Campaign, themed "Strengthen Disaster Risk Governance Resilience in Nigeria." Zubaida Umar, NEMA's Director General, and Aliyu Shehu Kafindangi, the agency's North West Zonal Director, based their warning on forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

They identified communities requiring urgent emergency preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of possible flooding. The affected local government areas include Ajingi, Bagwai, Bebeji, Bichi, and others.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, alongside Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, emphasized the government's commitment to improving resilience against climate-related disasters, including implementing flood control measures and launching a campaign to plant 10 million trees across Kano.
