NEMA Warns of Severe Flooding Risks in Kebbi State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning regarding severe flooding risks in 12 local government areas of Kebbi State during the 2026 rainy season. This warning was made during a stakeholder engagement event focused on disaster preparedness held in Birnin Kebbi in September.

Zubaida Umar, the Director General of NEMA, and Aliyu Shehu Kafindongi, the Director of the North West Zonal Office, indicated that the peak flood season is expected to occur, with projections suggesting possible overflow from the River Niger. The flooding is anticipated to impact farmland, riverside communities, and critical infrastructure.

The affected local government areas identified as high risk include Argungu, Augi, Bagudo, Birnin Kebbi, Dandi, Fakai, Koko Besse, Maiyama, Ngaski, Shanga, Zuru, and Yauri. NEMA has called for support from traditional institutions, religious groups, women and youth organizations, and the media to enhance community awareness and preparedness for potential flooding.

Abubakar Abdullahi, the Executive Secretary of the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and Nasiru Karofi from the National Orientation Agency stressed the importance of sustained public awareness efforts.
