NEMA Alerts Kebbi LGAs of Severe Flooding Risks

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has identified 12 local government areas in Kebbi at risk of severe flooding due to expected overflow from the River Niger. Zubaida Umar, representing the North West Zonal Director Aliyu Shehu Kafindongi, disclosed this during a stakeholder engagement for the National Disaster Preparedness Response Campaign 2026 held in Birnin Kebbi.

She noted that elevated water levels are expected to persist through October and November, which could lead to significant impacts on communities. The identified vulnerable local government areas include Argungu, Augi, Bagudo, Birnin Kebbi, Dandi, Fakai, Koko Besse, Maiyama, Ngaski, Shanga, Zuru, and Yauri.

NEMA has called on partners, traditional institutions, religious organizations, women's and youth groups, media, and the private sector to support efforts in amplifying early warning messages. Abubakar Abdullahi, the Executive Secretary of Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), emphasized the need for proactive measures to address the predicted flooding rather than waiting for disasters to occur.
