NERC Launches Net Billing Regulations for Solar Power Users

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that households and businesses with eligible solar power systems can benefit from its Net Billing Regulations 2026. This initiative allows consumers to earn electricity bill credits by supplying surplus power to the national grid.
Interested consumers must ensure their solar installations meet specific conditions, including a minimum capacity of 50 kilowatt-peak (kWp) and a maximum of 1.5 megawatt-peak (MWp). They must also be connected to a distribution company's network, meet technical and safety requirements, obtain approval from their electricity distribution company, sign a Net Billing Agreement, and register with NERC.
The scheme is particularly beneficial for commercial and industrial entities with large solar installations. Participants will receive credits based on an approved export tariff for the electricity exported to the grid, which will be deducted from their electricity bills.
However, the regulations do not guarantee cash payments for surplus electricity. The Net Billing Regulations 2026 were published on June 3, 2026.
