NERC Grants 10 Institutions Power Generation Permits

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved captive power generation permits for 10 institutions in the first half of 2026, allowing them to generate a combined total of 54.94 megawatts (MW) of electricity for their own use. Captive power generation permits enable organizations to operate power plants exclusively for their consumption.
In the first quarter of 2026, seven permits were issued, covering a generation capacity of 40.82MW, while three additional permits were granted in the second quarter for a total of 14.12MW. Notably, BUA Cement Plc in Sokoto State received approval for a capacity of 12MW, African Consulting Office Energy Solutions in Jigawa State for 1MW, and Power Gas Ebedei Limited in Delta State for 1.12MW.
The approvals come as many tertiary institutions struggle with high electricity bills, particularly for customers under Band A tariffs, leading to power disruptions and protests as managements negotiate with electricity distribution companies.
