Anambra State Bans Extravagant Funerals and Gifts

The Anambra State Government has introduced a new burial law aimed at curbing extravagant funeral practices that impose heavy financial burdens on bereaved families. The law prohibits condolence gifts exceeding the value of a jar of palm wine, a carton of beer, or a crate of soft drinks.

Offenders face fines of 100,000 Naira or six months imprisonment. The legislation mandates that burial ceremonies must be completed within one day, abolishing overnight vigils and limiting religious activities to end by 9:00 PM.

Additionally, the law restricts the number of attendees at funerals to six and prohibits the display of the deceased's image, erecting billboards, and advertising caskets. The government plans to establish burial grounds in every community and will monitor compliance through a designated committee.

The law also bans sharing of souvenirs during funerals and restricts traditional attire to immediate family members. This initiative is part of the government's effort to restore order to burial ceremonies and ease the financial strain on families.
