CITN Introduces New Tax Reform Law for Professionals

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), led by President Innoc Ohagwa, has introduced a new tax reform law that redefines the practice of taxation in Nigeria, significantly raising the standards for tax professionals. This law, enacted in June 2025, is part of a broader strategy to enhance the country's fiscal system.

During a virtual training program on March 26, 2026, Ohagwa emphasized the importance of proper certification and the need for legal practitioners to acquire specialized knowledge in taxation, which has become increasingly complex and multidisciplinary. The new legal framework allows taxpayers to represent themselves or appoint accredited tax agents.

Furthermore, the law reinforces the CITN's mandate to regulate tax practice in Nigeria. Ohagwa and other CITN officials, including Titilayo Enitan Fowokan, highlighted the critical role of legal practitioners in ensuring compliance with the new tax regime and encouraged them to broaden their expertise to navigate Nigeria's evolving fiscal landscape effectively.
