New Tax Reform Law Elevates Standards for Tax Professionals

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has announced a new tax reform law that was enacted in June 2025, which significantly raises the standards for tax professionals in Nigeria. Innoc Ohagwa, the president of CITN, highlighted the importance of this law during a virtual training program on June 26, 2025.

The new legal framework redefines the role of tax professionals, allowing taxpayers to represent themselves or appoint accredited tax agents. The law emphasizes the need for proper certification and specialized knowledge in taxation, which has become increasingly complex and multidisciplinary.

Ohagwa noted that legal practitioners must broaden their expertise to effectively navigate Nigeria's changing fiscal landscape. Titilayo Enitan Fowokan, former chairman of the CITN Tax Academy Committee, reiterated the critical role of tax professionals in ensuring compliance with the new tax regime.

The program aims to equip legal practitioners with the necessary knowledge to enhance their professional capacity and contribute strategically to Nigeria's fiscal governance.
